God Changes the Law

Standard

God changes the Law at times.

At first, God tells all the Israelites they will be His priests. (Ex.19:5-6) Soon after, the people make a golden calf and only the tribe of Levi agrees to stand with Moses for the Lord.

Through Moses, God set up a priesthood to operate exclusively under the tribe of Levi and it was done in conjunction with the Law.

After having established Levites as priests perpetually, fast forward to Jesus as explained in Hebrews 7. Now via an oath, God suddenly breaks through this perpetuality and starts a new & final priesthood with Jesus being the High Priest forever. He changes the Law.

“Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron? For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also.”
-Hebrews 7:11-12

No longer is this according to the Law, where only Levites can be priests. This is according to some external-to-the-Law oath. God is clearly above the Law, not equal to it. And as indicated in the text below, AFTER the Law, as in post-Law.

“For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever.”
-Hebrews 7:28

  1. ELOHIM says through the prophet Malachi:
    I am the L-RD G-D, I change NOT.
I am the same yesterday, today and forever.
This fact is reconfirmed in the book of Hebrews.
Torah is the basis for all understanding-especially about Messiah.

    • RabbiSam, are you saying that you are a better, more knowledgeable, more inspired knower/follower of the Law than Saul of Tarsus was?

“though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.” Phil 3:4-6

He taught that law and works could not save, nor sanctify a believer. So what your saying is that what Paul taught was irrelevant? Considering that he received his training from Jesus Christ Himself, I would say RabbiSam you are very misguided in your understanding.

      • Pete Garcia, and writer of this blog, Did not Yeshua/Jesus say in Matt 5:18 that not one jot or tittle would pass from the law? Did Paul know more than Jesus? Either you folks are misunderstanding Paul, or Matt 5:18 was not correct. I think I will go with Messiah on this one and figure out what the writer of Hebrews was saying based on that.

  2. What Laws of Moses (that were given to him by God) were changed? What exactly are these laws of Moses other than the 10 Commandments. If you bring someone new to Christ, what are you teaching them but total confusion. I am exploring the old and the new testaments of the Bible. It might be the best selling book of all times but it’s writings jump from the past to the future more times than can be counted and are so confusing to the reader. I have not read anywhere where people can agree on what is written. Really, how hard can it be. What is this Torah? Where is the Torah in the Bible or is it just another book written by men to convince others of their way of thinking. Man’s way of thinking not Gods. I have listened to a few videos of 119 ministries. I have asked many people in the Church why the Sabbath is not followed? It is on Saturday and yet the Church chooses to teach it on Sunday. You can’t argue that. You can research these so called Christian holidays and yes they all have roots in pagan ceremonies. So I can completely understand that these are not Christian Holidays at all but mans attempt to make them Holy which God “Hates”. Christ was not Born on Dec. 25th. No argument there even by modern day science. Then I have have to ask the big question. What version of the Bible is the real Bible? I have compared several and non will say the same thing. So once again we have man interpreting the Bible to what man wants and not what God wants and what God hates as is stated in the Bible.
I am not a scholar and I think they in all their so called wisdom do nothing more than corrupt the word of God to suit their needs. I am not well educated and I am sure most people in the times of Christ also weren’t educated so they would be easily influence by corrupt teachings of so called Elders and Scholars. The Bible is supposed to be something everyone can read and follow and yet why is it that it isn’t. Man put the Bible together. Why am I reading about Paul in the old testament when Paul is from the New Testament? I want to know the Laws of God given to Moses (other than the 10 commandments) but what are they and where are they? List them! How hard can it be to make a list of Laws for man to follow? Yet nowhere can I find such a list.
I know I have plenty more confusions that arise every time I try to read what passages in the Bible even are saying with words that aren’t even spoken in today’s language except by pompous scholars. Don’t even get me started in what these so called scholars translate ancient Greek into English that don’t speak to the practices of culture in the days of the Bible. To be honest I don’t know who or what to believe and I am sure this is the same reason people that are brought to Jesus end up running away in the end.

    • Wow! You weren’t kidding! Thanks so much for expressing your questions & frustrations. I can definitely go through your questions one by one and give you my very best answer based on my very best understanding of God’s Word. And if that is what you really want, I will be happy to do it. However, I am wondering why you want to know God’s laws? I know that sounds like an obvious answer, but I’m hearing in your comment that it’s very important to you to know what GOD’S laws are, stripped away from man’s influences. And so, I’m just curious why it’s important to you? (Knowing God’s laws are important to me, too, by the way.)

      • Sorry I don’t remember what version of the Bible I was quoting. I do remember it being very strange when I found it. I am trying to stay with the King James Bible. As I guess you could say a new Christian (returning to my faith) I have been facing much confusion along the way. I have asked many people what God’s Laws were other than the 10 Commandments but nobody will give me answers. I did however find in the Book of John that Christ did change laws. Pretty obvious to me that Laws Changed not only because nobody could live by them. We obviously don’t stone people to death for things today because Christ took away that burden from us by dying for us. As I read my bible I see that Christ went and preached in the temples but in many cases was forced out by his own people.
First I have been struggling with the Sabbath. I have researched history to get my answers why the Church changed it to Sunday. I found what I was looking for although the answer explained that the motive behind it didn’t work but the Church didn’t change it back. So there I wonder why? Then there is the big question as to keeping the Sabbath. What is “Keeping the Sabbath Holy”? I am struggling to even find a church to go to that isn’t corrupt either in teaching or in their own congregation. When I have gone, I still see the poor giving to the poor while the wealthy give so little since their wealth is of more importance. Or I see the Evangelical Minister living in his million dollar living like a king which is also what Christ speaks against.
Even religious holidays I have had a difficult time with. My whole life I never knew that these were all rooted in pagan ceremonies nor did I see any association with them until I came across people talking about the Torah on 119 ministries. These same traditions of the Jewish people that Jesus condemned them for holding on to. I have never seen a Torah or even know what is in them except what I can research online. Instructions to God’s Law given to Moses which are the same Laws that Christ told his people they couldn’t obey no matter how hard they tried which is why God sent us Jesus to die for us so we could receive forgiveness because of Christ’s blood. All I have seen in 119 ministries and other Christians are battles between each of them throwing scriptures back and forth in a battle of who is right and wrong.
Christ did give us new laws.
        Mark 12:30-31
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
Just these 2 laws alone I see the people of the world having a real hard time following no matter what they believe.

I also didn’t know they were some kind of Christian/Hebrew group trying to convert Christians. I have found that they concentrate most of their energy on serving God directly and not through Christ at all. I guess anyone can put their own twist on interpretation to make people believe what they want taking any piece of scripture out of context where ever they can. Truth is as I read over and over again in the Bible that unless you have the Spirit of Christ/the Holy Spirit within you and believe in him you will not enter the gates. The Law or the New Covenant is “Love”. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

        Philippians 3:7-10King James Version (KJV)

7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
        10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

I still see Christmas as celebrating the Birth of Christ. Nobody knows that actual birthday of Jesus. I do not celebrate the commercialism of Christmas. I really don’t know about Easter or any other holiday. I’m just learning. I guess I have to research more.
        Philippians 3:7-10
But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

And my journey continues as well as my personal struggles of my sins.
        Thank you

  3. Once again I read two different Bibles and both don’t say the same. Exodus 8:7 And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt. Exodus 8:7 7 And the frogs shall depart from thee, and from thy houses, and from thy servants, and from thy people; they shall remain in the river only.’ Seems to be some real concern for accuracy here don’t you think????

    • Would you happen to know the two versions you’re quoting? I looked up that verse in about 5 different translations and they all read pretty much the same way. But the second version you quoted talking about the frogs remaining only in the river, that verse was actually Exodus 8:11 in the versions I looked at. So I’m curious to know which version has it listed as 8:7. I will say, I’ve noticed typos in some of the online Bibles, but I think that is careless editing and more electronic error that anything intentional or changing God’s word.
